Well, it's been a while I admit. Life got in the way and I didn't blog at all.... but i'm back now. We've been light on the showing this year. New puppy Root came out for her first show at Blackpool Champ Show this year where she was best puppy. Keiko had a good day placing third in a strong open bitch class in Malamutes. At National, working and pastoral breeds show Root was second in puppy bitch and our old lady Rio did me proud by being awarded best veteran in breed, qualifying for Crufts 2018 and winning £20 into the bargain. our other outings were at Leeds and Darlington where I only took Root to concentrate fully on her. She won a big junior class at Leeds and then stood alone in puppy at Darlington, earning best puppy awards at both shows. Ive only managed one KC rally comp this year and the dogs did great (Root and Dan) but sadly I somehow missed three obstacles and NQ'd! Doh! Never mind, theres always next time! I'll try to keep on top of the blogging now...
But for now heres a pic of our younger gang Root, Anjo and Womble being daft.

It's all been a bit quiet on the blog front of late, so a quick update. 2016 was a quiet year for us show wise, I'm hoping to be in the ring a bit more in 2017, especially as we have a new addition to our family, Root the short coat Estrela. She is the first short coat in the UK for almost 40 years, and in Portugal long coats and short coats are separately classified wheras in the UK they all come under the Estrela Mountain Dog umbrella. This could make showing her quite interesting!

A belated blog post for our beautiful Malamute, Keiko. In December she acheived her Show Certificate of Merit. She had gained points at several shows to acheive this title, by winning multiple best of breed and group awards. Her qualifying show was Southport, where she won besy NSC and the pastoral group. They following day she was awarded reserve best of breed at Otley show under breed specialist Kerry Jelfs. her next show was Lichfield in January, where she was again awarded reserve best of breed, and most recently, St Helens show, she was awarded best AVNSC and group 2.

Last weekend we took a trip to Warwickshire for a weekend of specilaity shows. On Saturday there was the Alaskan Malamute Championship show at Stoneleigh. Keiko placed fourth in a strong limit class. Then it was an evening of camping which was enjoyed by dogs and humans alike, and the Estrela Mountain Dog Association limit show on the Sunday at Bearley, near Stratford Upon Avon.
Rio won her veteran d/b class and was awarded Best Veteran in Show. Anjo placed 1st in post graduate dog, Womble was 2nd in post graduate bitch, behind her littermate Willow, owned by Sally McKinlay and Ant Johnson. Willow was then awarded best bitch with Womble taking reserve best bitch, and then Willow went on to win Reserve Best in Show. Many thanks to the judge Dyllis Knight for appreciating my dogs.
In the fun classes after the show our Keiko won the ABE (anything but Estrela) class and best in show. And to top it all I won some goodies on the raffle too.

On 22nd March the Estrela Mountain Dog Association held it's annual open show in Bearley, Stratford upon Avon. I took Anjo and Rio along to show. Womble was in season so had to stay at home. As it was the first sunny weekend of the year, we camped out and it was a lovely experience to fall asleep listening to owls and wake to the sound of woodpeckers. We even saw wild deer, which is a rare treat for us seasiders! The show was held outdoors as the weather was fine. Anjo was awarded first in yearling dog, and Rio second in limit bitch. Hannah won best junior handler, handling Anjo for the first time. The fun show was hilarious as usual, with Rogue defending her best trick title, and Anjo performing well in the sausage catching!
Then on Good Friday, I took Womble and Keiko for a day out to Accrington Open Show. It was a really nice show with large rings for the dogs to move in. Womble was best of breed and Keiko placed first in open class. Then on Easter Monday, Womble competed in her second rally trial, and although she started amazingly well, she lost interest halfway theough the course, as Estrelas tend to do, so no more points towards that elusive first title just yet!

Catching up with some show results now.
We attended Manchester championship show in January, our only show that month, where Womble (Milagre Ice Ice Baby) won her class in rare breeds.
Back in February we also attended Huddersfield open show, where Willow (Milagre Got a Feelin at Estjak) was best of breed and group 3, and Rio (Asterel Chiquitita at Milagre) was reserve best of breed. Imported puppy Theia da Quinta da Liria, belonging to Michelle Mendes, was attending her second ever show and she was awarded best puppy, puppy group 1 and reserve best puppy in show, a huge accolade for this breed. Well done Michelle and Theia!
Crufts was the busy affair it always is, and the gang represented the breed on Discover Dogs over three days. They were all a credit to their breed and won lots of people over to Estrelas with their charm! In the breed judging Preston was third in pg dog, qualifying him for Crufts 2016, Willow was reserve in pg bitch, Rio was third in good citizen bitch, and Womble was sadly unplaced, though she did give a fantastic performance and moved beautifully on the green carpet.

On 29th December Womble (Milagre Ice Ice Baby) made breed history by being the first UK Estrela to compete in KC Rally Obedience. Womble gained a qualifying score of 198 at level two, a score considered to be Excellent. Womble needs two more qualifying scores in order to gain her first title. Womble is currently to our knowledge the only Estrela in the UK to be competing in an obedience discipline.

At Otley Show our Womble was Reserve Best of Breed under judge Lydia Brown. Rio was third in open and Keiko was second in a large Malamute open class. Womble then took second in AV Pastoral under judge Richard Kinsey.
At Redditch limit show Willow (Milagre Got a Feelin) was reserve best rare breed in show. Well done to owner handler Ant Johnson.
